Holy Cross, LCA win in tourney
Kevin Brady intercepted a pass at midcourt and drove the length of the floor for the winning basket with one second left, giving Holy Cross a 60-58 victory over Timberlake Christian in the opening round of the Timberlake Christian School Basketball tournament Thursday night.
In tonight's final at 7:30, Holy Cross will meet Lynchburg Christian Academy, a 62-51 winner over Virginia Episcopal School in Thursday's other semifinal. VES and Timberlake will meet in the 6 o'clock consolation game.
Holy Cross had let a 4-point third-quarter lead slip away and was tied at 58 when Brady stole the ball from Timberlake's Karl Uotinen for the winning basket.
Brady led Holy Cross with 14 points and Rodney DeGuzman added 12. Joe Guill led Timberlake with 23 points.
LCA's man-to-man defense forced VES out of its set offense and let the Bulldogs break the game open in the second period, when they outscored VES 15-3.
Jason Webster led LCA in scoring with 27 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds, while Kevin Hartless had 12. Steve Smith shared rebounding honors with Webster with 11.
David Hunter paced VES with 17 points, while Jason Rhyne had 12 and Hunter Tyree 10.
