Holy Cross senior Gustavo Lucena, an exchange student from Venezuela, got the better of Timberlake Christian School senior Keith Rogers Tuesday night, in a showdown between two of the area's top boys basketball scorers.
Lucena netted more than half of the Gaels' points, scoring 32, mostly from in the paint, while Michael Shenigo netted 20 points, all but two from 3-point range, in a 65-56 victory on the Virginia Independent Conference rival Tornadoes' new home court. Holy Cross double- and at times triple-teamed Rogers to hold him to 19 points, mostly in the first half.
“We had a lack of offensive execution; we didn’t play our A game. They’ve got a decent team and they did a good job defensively,” TCS coach Charlie Williams said. “We couldn’t keep them off the boards.”
