Record after this game: —
Jon Morgan's career night wasn't enough for the Tornadoes, who were plagued by poor free-throw shooting in a 64-62 loss to Grace Christian.
Morgan scored 39 points, two better than his previous career high. But Timberlake (10-11, 3-5 VIC) went 14 of 25 from the free-throw line and missed two critical free throws in the final minute. Chad Gary's shot with one second left sealed the win for Grace Christian (11-5, 5-2), which is ranked fourth in the state — Grace rushed a shot with about five seconds left, and Gary pulled down the long rebound, took a dribble and drained the winner.
It was a far cry from the teams' first meeting, a 53-41 Grace win at Grace. "This game was very well fought," Timberlake coach Jason Spear said, adding that the two teams could well meet again in the state tournament.
Timberlake was down two with a minute left and got to the free-throw line twice, but Morgan and Chris Newsome (16 points, 13 rebounds) each missed one of two free throws, leaving the Tornadoes with a tie instead of the lead. Spear said afterward he was glad his team had a shot at the end even though it didn't fall their way, crediting Timberlake for creating those opportunities.
