Holy Cross overcame a sloppy first-quarter performance and outscored visiting Timberlake Christian 44-21 over the middle two periods to win 81-55 on Tuesday, in a game that saw 49 fouls called.

Jim Laneve led all scorers with 21 points for the Gaels, with Matt Madden adding 19 -- matching Timberlake's Richard Carter. The Tornadoes led just once, 9-5, early in the first quarter, before Holy Cross closed it ahead 17-13. A run of unanswered baskets from Paul “Sandy” Dyson broke the game open, and Holy Cross carried a 41-25 lead into halftime before pulling away further in the third quarter.

Bennie Fears, who entered averaging 22.8 points per game, was held to two field goals by Holy Cross's Laneve and finished with eight points. Alan Branson fouled out for Timberlake, as did Holy Cross's Dan Riley. The win evened Holy Cross's record at 4-4.
