Bennie Fears got Timberlake Christian off to a fast start Friday night, but Holy Cross answered with a big scoring run in the second quarter and went on to beat the Tornadoes, 70-57.

Fears scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in the first quarter as Timberlake jumped ahead 21-12, but Jim Laneve sparked a 20-point Holy Cross rally in the second quarter that gave the Gaels a 34-27 halftime lead. Holy Cross stretched the margin further in the third quarter and led by eight points or more for most of the second half.

Laneve finished with 20 points, 12 of them in the first half, and went scoreless in the third quarter before Don Riley, who scored 16, took over. Ken Manspeaker added 14 points and helped Holy Cross control the boards, while Matt Madden had 12 and was a factor inside. Jim Dinwiddie scored 12 for Timberlake, and Richard Carter was the Tornadoes' top rebounder.

Holy Cross coach John Laneve said afterward that his team “didn't play our usual defensive game,” while Timberlake coach Allen Edgar, whose club fell to 5-7, said he was pleased overall with his team's play.
