Beating the Odds on the Court
The odds were against this year's varsity team from the very beginning of the season. With only two players taller than six feet, height was expected to be a major problem. What the team lacked in height they made up for in desire and talent. No one expected the first ever VIC tournament victory over Miller School. Also, finishing 3rd in the final VIC standings is a school high. Out-hustling this year's opponents put the odds back on our side.
SEASON PREVIEW
League: VIC
Coach: Charlie Williams
Top returning players: Paul Fitzgerald, F; Jason Spear, F; Wyatt Craig, G.
Analysis: The Tornadoes (2-0 after wins over Holy Cross and Grace Christian) will have a tough time repeating last year's record (one of the best in school history), but Williams thinks they have a chance.
Fitzgerald, a junior, and Spear, a senior, are excellent shooters and will handle the bulk of the scoring.
Craig provides excellent long-range shooting, and jayvee graduates Clint Dodson and Ethan Stanley have shown lots of promise in the two opening games this week.
Coach's comment: “We're small, but if we can keep people off the boards, we'll be okay. We have good chemistry, and we still have some work to do, but I think we can be as good as last year. We have to shoot the ball well and not have turnovers.”
