Court's ... in Session
The verdict is in and this year's varsity season was a complete success. Judge Charlie Williams was named VIC Coach of the Year. They finished with an overall record of 15 wins and 8 losses, including home victories against LCA, Holy Cross, and the first victory against North Cross in Timberlake history. The team was named WSET Team of the Week for December 20-26 as a result of their Holiday Classic championship. They were led into the VIC tournament, the first in school history, by senior guard Jon Phillips. Jon was named to the VIC All-Conference Team. With an awesome season like that, no one can appeal this decision!
League: VIC
Coach: Charlie Williams
Key Players: Jon Phillips, 6-0 G; Jason Spear, 5-11 G
Analysis: Timberlake was 6-15 last year and struggled when Phillips (17.5 ppg.) was out of the lineup with an injury. He's an outstanding long-range shooter and is healthy now.
The Tornadoes rarely have any size up front, but Williams is hoping that transfer student James Napier (6-3 senior), a missionary from Australia, will boost the inside scoring. He attended Jefferson Forest last year but did not play basketball.
Timberlake, which opens its season Tuesday at home against Grace Christian, will be a fairly young team with 9 of the 13 players being juniors. David Walker and Paul Fitzgerald, up from the junior varsity, are expected to battle for starting positions.
Coach's Comment: “We still have a lot of work to do defensively, but we are in good shape at the guards, and if we get good inside play, we should be competitive in the conference.” Charlie Williams
